What a node actually does
A full node is, in bitcoin.org's words, "a program that fully validates transactions and blocks". It checks every rule itself instead of trusting someone else. Most nodes also pass valid transactions and blocks along to other nodes. Many also serve lightweight wallets, and bitcoin.org notes that if too few nodes do, those wallets "have to use centralized services instead" (bitcoin.org: Running a full node).
What it costs
Disk space: the full chain is roughly 740 GB. A "pruned" setup that throws away old data can cut that to around 7 GB.
Memory: 2 GB of RAM.
Internet: about 400 kilobits per second upload, and around 20 GB of downloads per month. The very first sync downloads the whole chain. High-traffic nodes can upload 200 GB or more a month.
Time: the page says it should run about 6 hours a day, and that always on is better.

Why anyone bothers
Because "don't trust, verify" only means something if you can do the verifying. A node lets you check your own payments without asking a third party if they are real.
